Two people were killed and 20 were injured in a large fire that broke out today in a secret military research institute in the city Tver160 km from Moscow, according to rescue services, citing Russian news agencies.

Russian television broadcast images of dense black smoke rising above the imposing four-story yellow and brown building of the Central Aeronautical Research Institute of the Russian Air Force.

According to eyewitnesses, who spoke on television, many employees of the institute jumped out of the windows of the upper floors to escape the flames that spread to an area of ​​1,000 square meters.

“Two people were killed in the fire and another 20 were injured.” said a source in the emergency services, citing Russian news agencies.

Seven injured people are being treated, three of them in the intensive care unit, a spokesman for the Tver regional hospital said, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.

Early reports indicate that the fire may have been caused by damaged electrical wiring in the building, reported TASS.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the institute is particularly involved in research related to Russian aerospace defense, as well as the development of new air defense systems.
