Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez flew to the United States tonight to be tried for drug trafficking.
The plane of the American drug service with the former president of Honduras, guarded and handcuffed, took off from Tegucigalpa at 14:27 local time (23:27 Greek time).
The Honduran Supreme Court last month upheld the extradition of Hernandez to the United States, where he will stand trial on drug-related charges and possession of firearms.
Juan Orlando Hernandez surrendered in late January, after eight years, and was arrested in mid-February, following a request for extradition from a New York federal court that wanted to try him for “conspiracy” to import of more than 500 tons of cocaine in the USA.
New York prosecutors in charge of the case argue that the former president was an accomplice in cocaine trafficking, that he had transformed Honduras into a “drug lord”.
Mr Hernandez also allegedly received millions of dollars in bribes from drug gangs operating in Honduras, Mexico and other countries.
If convicted, he faces the risk of being sentenced to life in prison – this is exactly what has already been imposed on his brother, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez, former MP, in March 2021, by a US court.
The former president of the right has been promoting himself during his two terms as a major persecutor of drug traffickers. He asserted that his confession had been obtained through torture and that his confession had been obtained through torture.
