Phoenix Ghost: The new system sent by the US to Ukraine – 120 drones

by

The United States is sending new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Ukraine, which Washington says are ideal for the Ukrainian military.

The new system, dubbed Phoenix Ghost, was developed by the US Air Force, Pentagon spokesman John Kerby said Thursday.

At least 120 such UAVs will soon arrive in Kyiv as part of the latest US $ 800 million military aid package.

The development of the new system had begun before the war broke out in Ukraine, Mr. Kerby noted. Requires minimal training for Ukrainian servicemen familiar with similar systems as Switchblades.

The latter are small UAVs that can fly until their pilot detects a target through their sensors and directs them to hit it. Some analysts call them “flying ammunition.”

The Phoenix Ghost system “offers similar capabilities to the Switchblade unmanned series – similar, but not exactly the same,” according to Kirby, who declined to comment further.

The Pentagon will work “directly with the Ukrainian armed forces” to train its pilots, he added.

To date, Washington has announced at least eight aid packages to the Ukrainian military.
