North Korean dictator Kim Johng-un exchanged letters with outgoing South Korean President Moon Jae-in, North Korean state news agency KCNA reported on Friday.

In the letter, the leader of the Pyongyang dictatorship thanked Moon for his effort in trying to improve bilateral relations.

Also according to KCNA, the South Korean leader sent a letter to Kim on Wednesday (20) in which he promised to continue working for the reunification of the Koreas, despite the “difficult situation”. Moon’s office confirmed that he exchanged “friendship letters” with Kim.

In his letter, the South Korean wrote that the “age of confrontation” must be overcome through dialogue, and said he hoped that negotiations between the United States and North Korea on the denuclearization of the region would resume soon, spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said.

Moon and Kim held a series of unprecedented meetings in 2018 in an attempt to improve bilateral relations, without, however, achieving concrete long-term results.

In recent weeks, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen again due to missile tests carried out by the North, as South Korean troops began their annual exercises with the United States, seen by Pyongyang as a provocation.

Moon will step down from the presidency of South Korea on May 10, when he will be replaced by Yoon Suk-yeol, who was elected in a close race in March. Conservative, the president-elect said he was open to dialogue with North Korea, but defends the increase of Seoul’s defense capabilities to contain the neighbor’s provocations.
