Why analysts warn of authoritarian shift in Mexico; listen to podcast

by

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s attempt to reassert his power through a referendum this month was thwarted by the low turnout — which invalidated the result. It was necessary for 40% of voters to go to the polls, but the turnout did not exceed 20%.

Obrador has resorted to referendums to pressure other institutions to pass measures he thinks are important. As the response from supporters is almost always positive, even with low participation, he uses the result to project an image of an interpreter of the popular voice.

At the same time, he bets on a polarizing speech and attack on the press in morning lives. And that’s why analysts have warned of a possible authoritarian advance in Mexico.

In this Friday’s episode (22), Café da Manhã talks about the movements of López Obrador and discusses the state of Mexican democracy. The podcast talks with the reporter from Sheet Mayara Passion.
