THE Moldova summoned Russia’s ambassador today to protest the remarks of a Russian general who said Moscow would like to take control of southern Ukraine, in order to access a seceded region of Moldova.
Moldova expresses “deep concern” to Russian ambassador over remarks by Russian general Rustam Minekayev, states the country’s Foreign Ministry in a press release.
THE Moldova “He considers these statements unfounded and contradictory with Russia’s support for our country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Moldovan foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Moldova is a neutral country,” he said, calling on Moscow to “respect this principle.”
Moldova’s concern has to do with General Rustam’s statements Minekagefwho said today that Moscow wants to take “full control of Donbass (east) and the Ukrainian south.”
According to him, the control of the Ukrainian south will allow to help the pro-Russian separatists of Transnistria, who have ruled this region of Moldova since 1992, which borders the western part of Ukraine.
“Control of southern Ukraine will be a corridor to Transnistria, where we also see instances of repression of the Russian-speaking population,” Minekayev said.
