Germany: FDP Congress demands surrender of heavy weapons to Ukraine

by

The Congress of Liberals demanded the surrender of heavy weapons from Germany to Ukraine, with a decision approved by an “overwhelming majority” after the suggestion of the party’s executive council.

Ukraine “must be supported quickly and effectively in repelling the Russian offensive war. This includes, among other things, the delivery of heavy weapons and the rapid supply of armaments by German industry, for which, as announced, Germany will provide financing (…). We, the Free Democrats, support Ukraine in exercising its legal right to military self-defense against the aggressive Russian war (…). “The most important and, in the short term, most effective way to stop the Russian advance is to significantly intensify and accelerate the delivery of high-efficiency weapons to the Ukrainian army,” reads the congressional resolution.

The FDP also welcomed the agreement, which stipulates that allies from Eastern Europe will deliver weapons systems, which will then be replaced by Germany.

Earlier, FDP leader Christian Lindner called for the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine, provided that Germany cooperates with its allies, does not jeopardize its own defense capabilities and allied obligations, and does not become the same war place. “This limits choices,” Mr Lindner said, expressing confidence in Chancellor Olaf Solz, whom he described as “a responsible leader who weighs things and makes decisions on that basis”. Nevertheless, many of the FDP delegates directly criticized the chancellor for his policy of handing over weapons to Ukraine.
