U.S. diplomacy said Monday it was “deeply concerned and disappointed” by the sentencing of Turkish tycoon Osman Kavala, who was accused of plotting to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to life in prison.
“This unjust condemnation runs counter to respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
“We call again on Turkey to release Osman Kavala,” the State Department said in a statement.
Mr. Kavala was found guilty of attempting to overthrow the Turkish government by financing demonstrations. The European Court of Human Rights and Western governments have called the trial of a businessman and philanthropist, a black sheep in the Erdogan government, a political persecution.
“We remain very concerned about the ongoing legal crackdown on civil society, the media, politicians and businessmen in Turkey,” the State Department said in a statement.
