All rescuers were able to reach a miner trapped underground after an earthquake shook the Borynia-Zofiowka mine in southern Poland on Saturday morning, an official said.
Two state-owned JSW mines have been hit by fatalities over the past week, with the Polish prime minister pledging that authorities would check safety standards.
“Shortly before 3pm local time, a team from the Central Mine Rescue Station arrived at one of the victims,” ​​said Marsin Golebiovski, the mine’s director, according to the state-run PAP news agency.
“At the moment, efforts are being made to get him out from under the water and transport the wounded to the base and then to the surface.”
Of the 52 workers at the mine when the quake struck, 42 ​​escaped on their own. Six of those trapped below the surface of the earth have since been found dead.
“We will try to locate three other employees,” Golebowski said.
