Protesters threw tomatoes at French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday during a visit to a market in Cergy, near Paris, but he was not hit.
This was the French leader’s first public engagement since his re-election last Sunday (24).
The Frenchman was the target of the “tomato” while talking to residents of the area. As soon as the first fruits were thrown, the president’s security team reacted and protected his head.
An umbrella was then opened and Macron was taken to a covered area of the market, according to Le Parisien newspaper. Last year, the French president had already been slapped in the face and hit by an egg — which did not break — on visits to cities in the interior of the country.
On Sunday, Macron defeated Marine Le Pen, a far-right candidate, in a runoff vote with 28% abstention, one of the highest in decades.
His first term was marked by crises – social protests such as the “yellow vests”, a pandemic with millions of people confined and the return of war in Europe with the Russian invasion of Ukraine – that transformed the France he took over in 2017. .
One of the main challenges in his second term will be to unite France after the elections and gain support from the most popular classes, who preferred other candidates or abstained from voting.
