THE Prince Andrewwho has resigned from his royal duties due to his connection with the case of the pedophile stockbroker Jeffrey Epstein, today lost the honorary title awarded to him by the City of York.
City councilors unanimously voted to remove the title of “Freedom of the City” from the Duke of York.
This title dates back to 1272 and was attributed during the Middle Ages to important personalities of the city or to foreign visitors, meaning that they are not slaveholders. It was given to Andrew in 1987 and was simply an honor. The “Free Citizens” during the Anglo-Saxon period played a role mainly in controlling trade and distributing pasture rights.
From January the 62-year-old prince no longer has any official authority and can not use the title of His Highness, after she was accused by the American Virginia Joufre of sexual abuse when she was a minor and he had a close friendship with Epstein. Their legal dispute ended with an out-of-court settlement.
Before the vote in the city council, a resident of the city, Gwen Sunniberndescribed Andrew as “shameful” and said that he should also be declared an “undesirable person” in the city but also lose the title of duke.
“Our queen has stripped him of almost all his titles and responsibilities, except for the title of duke, which tarnishes this city.”he underlined.
Independent City Councilman Mark Walters said removing the title from Prince Andrew would send a “strong message”.
Prince Andrew appeared publicly on March 29 in Westminster Abbey, next to his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in a ceremony in memory of his father, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021 at the age of 99.
