Diplomatic crisis between Berlin and Ankara broke out on Friday due to a life sentence imposed by a Turkish court on Osman Kavalas.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador to Ankara to express its protest against the Turkish government in response to Germany’s earlier decision to summon the Turkish ambassador to Berlin on the occasion of the conviction of Turkish activist and lifelong.
A Turkish diplomatic source said that German Ambassador to Ankara Jürgen Schultz had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry at 5.30pm (local time) “by Deputy Foreign Minister Farouk Kaimaktsi”.
Earlier, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said that the Turkish ambassador had been summoned and that “we had clearly explained the position of the German government to him once again”, adding that “other European Union countries” would react “in the same way”.
“No country, including Germany, he does not have the right “to interfere in Turkey’s internal affairs,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said earlier on Twitter, urging Berlin to … “respect international law.”
Kavala, who was jailed for 4.5 years, was sentenced on Monday to life in prison for plotting to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At the end of the trial, he spoke of his “judicial murder”. His conviction provoked strong reactions in the US and the EU, while protests were organized in Turkey.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday reiterated his accusations against Osman Kavala, after sentencing him to life in prison, despite calls for him to be released by Western governments and international organizations.
“The verdict handed down against someone upset a lot of circles. This someone was the Soros of Turkey“, Said the head of the Turkish state, paralleling Mr. Kavalas with the American billionaire of Hungarian origin George Soros, a black sheep of several authoritarian regimes.
