The “Kiev ghost” quickly gained worldwide fame after it was reported that it shot down six Russian planes on the first day of the Russian invasion, as announced by the Ukrainian government.
Subsequently, speculation grew that Tarabalka was a myth invented by the Ukrainians to inspire bravery in the country’s militant ranks. However, Ukrainian sources confirmed to the British newspaper his identity and his death in The Times. The helmet and glasses are expected to be sold at auction in London, but no further details have been released.
Tarabalka was posthumously awarded Ukraine’s most important medal for bravery in battle, the Order of the Golden Star, with the title “Hero of Ukraine”.
