Russians say target of Ukrainian bombing checkpoint in Kursk province

The governor of the Russian West Kursk Province, which borders Ukraine, said earlier that numerous mortars had been fired from the direction of Ukraine at a Russian checkpoint.

In a video posted to the Telegram, Provincial Governor Roman Starovit said there were no casualties or damage. Reuters could not verify the validity of the governor’s allegations. The Ukrainian side did not comment on the incident.

Exchange of prisoners of war

Ukraine held an exchange of prisoners of war with Russia today, with seven soldiers and seven civilians returning home, Deputy Prime Minister Irina Veresuk said in an online post. Among the soldiers was a woman who is five months pregnant, he added.

Veresuk did not specify how many Russians were handed over to Moscow during the exchange.

The two countries have exchanged prisoners several times during the conflict that began with the Russian invasion on February 24, and on Thursday Ukraine announced that Russia had handed over 33 Ukrainian soldiers.

New fierce US-Russia confrontation

It is noted that the US Department of Defense on Friday blamed the Russian President Vladimir Putin that he acted with “perversion” in the invasion of Ukraine.

The representative John Kirby became apparently emotionally charged, wondering how a “moral man” could justify the atrocities committed by Russia.

“I do not think we fully appreciated the extent to which (Mr Putin) would reach this kind of violence and cruelty,” Kirby said.

But Russia’s ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov dismissed the allegations. He described Mr Kirby’s comments as “offensive and unacceptable”. Mr. Antonov accused Kirby of “resorting to street insults.”

“It has become the rule here for (US) government officials to base their judgments on the dirty lies of the Ukrainian authorities,” the Russian ambassador said.
