Iraq: Six rockets fired at Kurdistan – Two hit refinery

by

Six Katyusha rockets landed on Sunday in its autonomous region Iraqi Kurdistanlocal authorities said, with the two hitting a refinery, causing “minor damage”, said sources close to the security forces.

“Six rockets landed near the Zamb River in the Habat area,” the Kurdish counterterrorism service said in a statement, without elaborating on the target. They assured that the attack did not cause “any casualties or damage”.

But a source close to local security forces and an oil source said part of the Kauergosk refinery was hit by “two rockets”, causing “minor damage” and a fire that “quickly came under control”.

A local official, speaking on condition of anonymity, assured that the rockets landed about five kilometers from the refinery, one of the most important in this oil-rich area northwest of Arbil, the capital of Kurdistan.

According to the Kurdish counter-terrorism service, the rockets were fired from the Bartella location in the neighboring province of Nineveh.

It has not existed so far taking responsibility for these fires.

Nineveh, whose capital is Mosul, is administratively subordinate to the federal government of Baghdad.

This area, once a stronghold of Islamic State (IS) jihadists, was recaptured in 2017 by the Iraqi army, federal police and Hasd al-Saabi paramilitaries (the “People’s Mobilization Units”).

On April 6, three rockets landed near the same refinery, with no reports of casualties or damage.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi has said that the armed forces will pursue the perpetrators of what he called a “cowardly attack” during a conversation with Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani.
