Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Award: Call for Proposals

by

May 3, World Press Freedom Day, The European Parliament has called for applications for the second Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Award.

The price is awarded each year for outstanding achievements in the field of journalism promoting or defending the fundamental principles and values of the European Union, such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights.

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola stated: «Parliament’s message is clear. Europe stands by those who seek the truth. Daphne’s voice was violently silenced because it revealed the truth, showing why we should never let journalists become targets or victims. With this award, Parliament continues to defend freedom of speech, pluralism in the media and quality journalism, helping to transmit these values to future generations.».

Candidates can be nominated by professional journalists and groups of journalists from any country in the world. Journalistic work that has been published or broadcast in the media based in any of the 27 Member States of the European Union will be accepted. The aim is to support and emphasize the importance of professional journalism in protecting freedom and equality.

The winner will be selected by an independent committee composed of representatives of the press and civil society from the 27 EU Member States., as well as representatives of the largest journalistic associations in Europe. The award ceremony is held every year around October 16, the date of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The prize and the cash prize (amounting to 20,000 euros) accompanying it are another example of the European Parliament ‘s significant support for investigative journalism and how important it considers freedom of the press. In recent years, Parliament has warned of attempts to undermine pluralism in the EU and beyond. MEPs have condemned the attacks on journalists, especially those from politicians, calling on the Commission to submit a legislative proposal against abuses and lawsuits. On April 27, the proposal to crack down on malicious legal action against journalists and activists was published.

The submission of candidate articles will be done through the platform https://daphnejournalismprize.eu/ until 31 July 2022, at 12.00 midnight (Central European Summer Time).

Who was Daphne Caruana Galizia?

Daphne Caruana Galizia was Maltese journalist, blogger and anti-corruption activist. In her career, she has uncovered extensive information on issues related to corruption, money laundering, organized crime, the sale of “golden passports” to third-country nationals and the Maltese government’s involvement in the “Panama Papers” scandal.

Having repeatedly received harassment and threats, the journalist was murdered on October 16, 2017, when a bomb placed in her car exploded. The outcry over how the authorities handled the murder case eventually led to the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. Expressing their disapproval of the omissions in the conduct of the polls, MEPs called on the European Commission in December 2019 to take action.
