Biden on abortion: Defending the fundamental right of women to choose

by

US President Joe Biden today launched a major political battle to save him right to abortion, one day after it leaked to the press the draft opinion of the Supreme Court which may overturn the case law of 1973. The Democratic president called on the Americans to defend this right at the polls in the upcoming by-elections.

“I believe that women’s right to choose is fundamentalHe reiterated in a statement, calling on voters to “choose candidates” who are in favor of this right in the November elections. In the by-elections, the ruling party – in this case the Democrats – has traditionally lost seats.

If the Supreme Court annuls the case law of 1973, as implied by the draft leaked to Politico on Monday, “the electors of our nation, at all levels, must protect the right of women to choose. “It is up to the voters to choose the candidates who are in favor of ‘the right to abortion,'” Biden said in a statement.

“We will need more senators in favor of the right to vote and a majority in House of Representatives to adopt a law that will codify (the existing jurisprudence), which I will ratify “, explained the American president who is a faithful Catholic but also an ardent supporter of right to abortion.

Biden, whose party worries it will suffer a heavy defeat in the November election, also promised that his government would be “ready” to react when the Supreme Court ruling is announced. In his announcement he speaks of an “administrative” response, without further details.

Democrats now control the House of Representatives and the Senate. But in the Senate they have a marginal majority that does not currently allow them to legislate at the federal level to repeal the very restrictive laws recently passed by some conservative states.

Politico, based on this unprecedented leak, caused a political uproar on Monday, revealing that the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn the 1973 decision (Roe v. Wade) on the right to abortion. In such a case, each State will be free to decide whether to prohibit abortions or to allow them and under what conditions.
