Opinion – Ora Pois: Lisbon has a great Portuguese-language literary festival

by

After two virtual editions, Lisboa 5L (International Festival of Literature and Portuguese Language) will finally take to the streets of the Portuguese capital. The event takes place between May 4th and 8th, with activities spread throughout the city.

The festival coincides with the celebrations of the World Portuguese Language Day, celebrated on May 5th.

Born during the pandemic, the project brings together several cultural aspects, the five Ls of the title: language, literature, books, bookstores and reading.

The intense and elaborate program, with representatives from several countries, includes meetings with authors, lectures, concerts, exhibitions and cinema sessions.

One of the highlights takes place on Friday (6th), with a show in honor of Brazilian Chico Buarque, with the participation of Jorge Palma, Luísa Sobral, Luca Argel, A Garota Não and Alice Neto De Sousa.

“Chico Buarque’s songs treat the word with a tenderness that is at the same time erudite, roguish, passionate and courageous. ‘Palavra Prima’ brings together four great song writers in a tribute to Chico, who together with the poet and speaker Alice Neto de Sousa will spread the first word of Chico Buarque”, says the program.

Throughout the festival, there are 23 conversation circles with authors. This Wednesday (4), Angolan José Eduardo Agualusa meets with Brazilian journalist Paulo Werneck, director of the literary magazine Quatro Cinco Um, for a conversation about “The Most Beautiful End of the World”, the writer’s latest book, released in 2021.

On the weekend, an independent bookstore fair takes place in a traditional Lisbon cultural hub: Largo de São Carolos.

With the exception of movie sessions and shows, all activities are free of charge.

The complete program is available on the Lisboa 5L festival website.
