Solz: Germany to support Finland, Sweden joining NATO

Germany will support possible application for membership of Finland and Sweden in NATOChancellor Olaf Soltz assured the prime ministers of the two states, stressing at the same time that the relevant decisions should be taken in the countries themselves.

“If these two countries decide that they want to be part of the NATO alliance, they can rely on our support, which they have regardless of membership (…) The decision to join NATO concerns the countries themselves and the relevant discussion must be carried out on the spot “said Mr. Soltz during a joint press conference with the Prime Ministers of Sweden, Magdalena Anderson and the Prime Minister of Finland, Sana Marinon the sidelines of the “Government Day” organized today and tomorrow in Mezenberg, Brandenburg, on Ukraine.

Ms. Marin for her part stressed that the Russian attack on Ukraine completely changed the security situation in Europe. “There is no going back,” she said, adding that her country has a strong and modern army that can work with NATO at any time. “Finland has already contributed to European security and stability, but it is time, in view of the changing international situation, to decide whether to join NATO or remain independent.”added Sana Marin and thanked the German Chancellor for his “leading stance” in the Ukraine war.

Mrs. Anderson for her part Sweden stated that the new security situation requires closer cooperation between its countries Baltic Sea in the European Union and the transatlantic partners. Her government is expected to present an analysis of fundamental security policies on May 13th. These may include the country’s accession to NATO. “All options are on the table”stressed Magdalena ‘Anderson.
