Opinion – Pedro Monzón: Instead of highlighting partial statements, Folha should be surprised by Cuba’s resilience

by

On April 25 it was published in Sheet a superficial report on Cuba that I hope is simply the result of ignorance. It is not strange, since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, that Cuba has been the target of a shower of fake news. The intention is to promote a negative virtual image of the country. The great sin that Cuba committed was to conquer, for the first time, true independence and begin to build a country benefited by very profound changes. That’s why he became a bad example.

Hence the relentless persecution for more than 60 years, with frequent attacks and a cruel economic, commercial and financial blockade, which caused losses of more than US$ 1 trillion, justified by many false arguments. The overwhelming majority of UN members’ votes against the blockade for 29 consecutive years have not brought about any change in US policy.

It is impossible to classify Cuba without considering what the damage caused by the aggression of the greatest power on the planet meant to Cubans. However, despite these major obstacles, Cuba exhibits achievements that distinguish it worldwide. Education is free, which is why the entire population is highly educated; the public health system has a high professional level, covers all corners of the country and has allowed Cuba to help many countries in the world with hundreds of thousands of doctors; thanks to the development of science, the country has immunized against Covid, with its own vaccines, more than 97% of the population, including all children; a social security policy benefited the entire population; no one goes hungry or dies of hunger; there are no homeless people.

UNICEF considers that Cuba demonstrates a high level of protection and development for children and adolescents; drug trafficking and consumption are not problems; structurally and legally discrimination based on race or gender has disappeared. The life expectancy indicator is among the highest in the world, and infant mortality among the lowest. Cuba is considered a country with a high HDI and has fulfilled most of the Millennium Development Goals, according to the Human Rights Council.

Cuba is one of the safest countries in the world, and delinquency is minimal. Political and social stability is another attribute of the country. In 60 years, there are only two manifestations of discontent, highly manipulated internationally, one in 1994 and another (27 years later!) in 2021, provoked within the framework of complex international situations and at times when the blockade was reinforced.

The July 2021 incidents were triggered by the extreme tightening of the lockdown, in a situation as difficult as the coronavirus pandemic. This context was accompanied by an international campaign of discredit and the use of millions of dollars to finance small groups, outside and inside Cuba, without any popular support, with the aim of provoking a social catastrophe.

All these efforts fail because they are the artificial results of an imported phenomenon. Cuba’s real political enemy is not within its territory — it is the United States.

Cuba constitutes a rule of law. After the triumph of the Revolution, there was no torture, no disappearances or repression, as is seen in many other countries. Any statement to the contrary is a pure lie. As in any country, vandalism is punished, as are violent actions instigated by foreign interests. It is also true that altered information proliferates about the legitimate legal processes that have been carried out against those who provoke these violent disturbances and vandalism.

Instead of highlighting four or five partial statements to qualify Cuba, what should be surprising is how it was possible, in such difficult conditions and for so long, the Cuban system not to have collapsed, as it could have happened with any other country. On the contrary, the people have historically been the protagonist of numerous massive demonstrations in support of the Revolution, which has just been repeated in the immense demonstrations throughout the national territory on this 1st of May.

This is the country that lightly tried to insufficiently qualify the great report published in Sheetnewspaper that offered us space, which we are grateful for.
