Melanson – Socialists agree to run in French parliamentary elections

by

A principle agreement that will now be presented for internal approval to the Socialist Party was negotiated overnight, the Socialists and Jean-Luc Melanson’s party.

According to ERT correspondent Thomas Papaioannou, the next phase is the split in the Socialist Party starring big names who reject certain points of the program of the far-left “Insubordinate France”.

If the agreement succeeds, for the first time the whole spectrum of the Left will unite in the parliamentary elections: the Greens, the far-left New Anti-Capitalist Party, the Disobedient France and the Socialist Party.

In the polls they get 30%, as much as Emanuel Macron’s party or the far right (Le Pen + Zemmour).

The big obstacle which can not be easily overcome for some Socialists is one point in Melanson’s program for “European disobedience”, something like an “opt-out” of the European treaties with which they disagree.

The far-left Melanson in 2014, in the midst of the Greek crisis, wanted France to leave the European Union, or not to be disciplined in the European treaties.

Now Melanson, who is approaching the center of the Left, does not want Frexit, of course, but disobedience to points of the conditions that are not in line with his political ideas.

His main argument is that all EU countries, in fact, deviate from rules that are not in their best interests with Germany and Denmark first.

The Socialists do not easily accept this because it is François Mitterrand’s legacy: many of the conditions are part of his creations, starting with the eurozone.
