by

THE Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke by telephone today with its president Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelenskyin order to “discuss and to overcome the issue with the canceled visit “of the German president in Kiev.

According to Der Spiegel magazine, during the 45-minute conversation Mr Steinmeier assured Mr Zelensky of Germany ‘s full support. The fact that the two presidents spoke directly, “Is seen as a sign of mutual efforts to overcome the recent tensions and return to a somewhat normal atmosphere”writes the magazine.

Mr. Steinmeier had been declared unwelcome by Kiev in April, due to his earlier stance towards Russia, a fact that strained relations between the two countries and prevented Chancellor Olaf Soltz from a possible visit to Ukraine. On this occasion, the Ambassador of Ukraine in Berlin ‘Andriy Melnik even described the Chancellor a few days ago “Offended sausage”as, as he said, “Represents the victim, in a behavior that does not suit a political leader”.

“Tensions of the past have been clarified”, said a spokesman for the presidency, adding that Mr Zelensky had invited both Mr Steinmeier and the entire German political leadership to Kiev. It is unclear, however, if and when Olaf Soltz will respond to this invitation. According to Spiegel, some information links the visit of French President Emanuel Macron to Berlin on Monday with a possible joint visit to Ukraine.
