The death toll from Friday’s blast that wrecked much of Saratoga, Havana’s luxury hotel, rose to 31 on Sunday, the Cuban health ministry said.
An earlier official report put the death toll at 30.
Twenty-four people continue to are hospitalizedaccording to the same source.
Firefighters and members of rescue teams continued yesterday the search for bodies in the wreckage of the neoclassical building in the old town.
The dead are 16 men and 14 women. Four of the victims were minors. A 29-year-old woman was also killed spanish tourist as she was walking with her husband, who was seriously injured. Much of the luxury hotel under renovation, which was nearing completion – was to reopen tomorrow, Tuesday – was destroyed.
Seven of the 24 injured are in critical condition, another six are in serious condition and 11 are less serious.
As the Ministry of Tourism announced on Saturday, 51 people were working inside the building when the explosion took place, which is estimated to be due to a leak while the hotel was being refueled by a tanker with liquefied natural gas. The first four floors were badly damaged.
