THE White House announced today that it has reached an agreement with 20 ISPs, including AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, to reduce subscription costs and ensure high-speed access to low-income households.
“The Biden-Harris administration has secured the commitment of the top 20 Internet access providers, which ensure that 80% of the American population lives in urban, suburban and rural areas, to increase their speeds and reduce their prices,” says one announcement.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are expected to attend a ceremony in Washington this afternoon to formalize the deal in the presence of the heads of major telecommunications groups.
The commitments are part of the Biden government’s huge $ 1.2 billion infrastructure plan. One aspect of this plan is to reduce it to $ 30 a month internet subscription costs for tens of millions of Americans thanks to subsidies.
According to the White House, eligible households will thus be able to access very high-speed access free of charge.
At least 11.5 million of them have already applied for the aid, but the government estimates that a total of 48 million households will be eligible for it.
Eligible families are those whose income is at least 200% below the federal poverty line or whose member is already benefiting from a government assistance program, such as the Medicaid health insurance or SNAP food aid scheme.
The Biden administration has also set up a website, GetInternet.gov, which details the steps one must take to apply for a grant.
