“We are in a war economy – Critical next semester for gas”, says the Italian Minister of Environmental Transition

by

“We are in a phase of war economy. The European Commission is discussing the possibility of a second Recovery Plan, as it brings to the fore a broader, European issue. In this war economy, some countries will suffer more consequences of energy choices that will take place “, said the Italian Minister for Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani.

At the same time, Tsingolani criticized his country’s energy strategy so far and added:

“In 2001, 25% of natural gas was produced in Italy. In 2021 this percentage decreased to 3%. There was, however, no benefit, because we reduced domestic production, but replaced it with supplies from abroad. We did not overcome the use of coal, the consequences for the environment – with the various transports – were heavier, we financed other countries and we weakened our businesses “.

In relation to future developments, always in the field of natural gas, the competent Italian minister stated:

“We have secured 25 billion cubic meters of supplies, but it will take some time to start supplying them. For full flow, we will have to wait until 2024. The most critical period is the next six to eight months. If Russia cuts off gas supplies in the near future, we could have a winter problem. In other words, it may prove to be problematic to deal with the next winter season, only with the natural gas that we have stored “.
