“If Finland and Sweden decide to join NATO, this decision will be historic and will strengthen our common security,” North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a news conference following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.
It is more important than ever to be united, added Stoltenberg, who spoke to reporters from Brussels via video conference as he recently tested positive for the coronavirus.
He added that last night the leaders of Sweden and Finland informed about their applications to join NATO. “It is up to the states to decide their course. “We will respect whatever decision they make,” said the NATO Secretary General.
“All sovereign states have the right to choose their own path. If they decide to join it will be a historic moment. “It will increase common security,” he said.
The NATO Secretary General also referred to war in Ukraine, saying that Kyiv can win the war against Russia. He said Moscow was not achieving its military goals, had failed to occupy Kyiv and Kharkiv, and was delaying its attack on Donbas.
For her part, the German Foreign Minister, Analena Berbockstated that support for Ukraine should continue as long as the Ukrainians need it.
He goes on to say that NATO’s door is open for Finland and Sweden if they want to join.
He added that the two countries are in fact “already members” of the Alliance, simply without a membership card.
