Italian police managed to prevent cyber-attacks by Russian hackers, who tried to create problems throughout the Eurovision voting process. In Turin, however, everything went smoothly.
Many believe that this year’s competition should be considered of historical significance. Eventually the predictions were confirmed and the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won comfortably, triumphing thanks to the vote of the public. However, it was almost ruled out. Because at the end of their appearance, the Ukrainian artists asked all the citizens of Europe to help their country, Mariupol and those who are in the Azovstal steelworks. Otherwise it would have been considered political interference (which is prohibited by the regulation), but yesterday the Eurovision officials showed understanding and decided that it was a humanitarian appeal.
A song that raises even more awareness of Europe, a victory which, to some extent, offers a symbolic response to Kiev’s request to join the European Union family. But the war, unfortunately, continues. Kalush Orchestra leader and founder Oleg Pius said shortly after the victory: “In two days we will return to Ukraine and we are ready to fight.”
“Give peace a chance” was heard in the squares and streets of Turin and the musical surprises were not lacking: Maneskin, a year after their victory in Eurovision, returned with their new track Supermodel. Their “caretaker”, Damiano, however, could not move comfortably on stage – as usual – due to a broken leg. He twisted in London, two days ago, during the shooting of the video clip. He arrived in Turin on crutches and shortly before singing, he said: “Slow down the problem, I’m not used to being scared for so little.”
Amanda Georgiadi
As for the Greek participation, with Amanda Georgiadi and the song Die together, today the Italian press writes: “This is undoubtedly a quality and poetic piece”. But it is also clear that the criteria, this year, were not strictly purely musical.
