A total of 237 cyber-attacks against Ukraine have been carried out by cybercriminals directly linked to Russia from February 23 to April 8, according to Microsoft.
The groups have carried out at least 38 attacks that have destroyed archives on hundreds of systems of many organizations in the country, according to a report by the Company’s Digital Security Unit. «These actions are aimed at undermining citizens’ trust in these organizations and undermining Ukraine’s governmental and military functions.“, Is typically emphasized in the special report that saw the light of day.
The main groups of malware used for malicious activity in the context of Russia’s relentless digital attacks include the following: WhisperGate, HermeticWiper (FoxBlade also known as KillDisk), HermeticRansom (SonicVote), IssacWiper (Lasainraw), CaddyWiper, DoubleZ (DoubleZeroBlade, and IndiaBlade).
It is estimated that 32% of the 38 catastrophic attacks targeted Ukrainian government agencies at national, regional and city level, with more than 40% of the attacks targeting organizations in vital infrastructure areas in the country.
According to the company report, one of the groups that carried out the attacks had been accused in the past of a similar attack on SolarWinds in 2020. At the time, the same group had attempted to breach IT companies serving government customers in NATO Member States, using access to data from Western foreign policy organizations.
“Russia’s use of cyberattacks also appears to be linked to the company’s military operations,” said Tom Bert, corporate vice president for security and customer trust. “We believe that cyber attacks will continue and escalate as the conflict between the two sides rages,” he said.
