The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, became the first in the US to require menstrual products to be distributed free of charge in public restrooms.
The law, unanimously approved by the city council, will enter into force on January 1, 2022, according to information from the American network CNN. The fine for those who breach it will be US$100 (R$556).
In public restrooms, internal and external absorbents should be offered, as well as toilet paper and soap. The rule also applies to restrooms located inside companies.
The city’s mayor, Democrat Christopher Taylor, who proposed the legislation, said “access to these items is a matter of personal dignity, a human need and a right to health.” Ann Arbor is a university community of about 120,000 people.
According to Tayor, the initiative came from a conversation with a high school student, who told him about her concern about homeless people’s lack of access to menstrual products.
