North Korean authorities have announced six more “fever” deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the official KCNA news agency.
At the same time, the same source reported that another 269,510 people showed symptoms of “fever”.
These numbers come just twenty-four hours after the official outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic in the country, which is believed to be due to a sub-variant of Omicron, was officially confirmed.
According to the KCNA, the death toll from the outbreak has so far reached 56 dead out of a total of 1,483,060 patients with “fever”, while 663,910 people are being treated.
It is not clear how many of them have actually been infected with SARS-CoV-2, as Pyongyang does not have the means to conduct mass tests.
The agency also reported that the North Korean army medical staff had deployed forces “in all Pyongyang pharmacies” and began “supplying medicines”.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent some kits to the isolated country, but has not specified what kind of preparations they contain. China and South Korea have offered to help if the North Korean government so requests.
Authorities seem to be dealing with cases of COVID-19 infection using antibiotics for the time being, while state media are proposing “traditional” treatments. Experts point out that although the country has a large number of doctors and experience in dealing with health crises, its health system is facing a worryingly severe shortage of resources and resources, and whether North Korea will accept its neighbors’ offer of help remains to be seen.
