The first lady of the USA in Ecuador, Panama and Costa Rica

Jill Biden, the wife of US President Joe Biden, will travel from today 18 to Monday 23 May in Ecuador, Panama and Costa Rica, the White House announced yesterday, Tuesday, in preparation for the US Summit in to which Latin American countries will be invited.

During the announcement, during her trip, the “First Lady”, whose role is expanding recently, will meet with the president of Ecuador Guillermo Lasso, with the first lady of Panama Jasmine Colon de Cortiso and with the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Τάβες.

Ms. Biden will visit, among other things, during her tour the school, an HIV-positive home and a children’s hospital.

He emphasized the need to focus on US relations with the three countries, and on “their commitment to democracy”, according to a press release issued by the US presidency.

The trip looks like a prelude to the Summit of America, which will be held in Los Angeles (California, South) from June 6 to 10, with invited heads of state and government from all over the continent.

Preparations for this grand diplomatic meeting, however, turned into a headache for the Biden government.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has virtually threatened to boycott the summit unless Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are invited.

Jill Biden has been increasing her public appearances lately, visiting Ukraine in particular, something that was widely covered by the media. Her husband has not visited Kyiv since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The first lady of the United States, although she deals mainly with topics that are traditionally devoted to the wives of American presidents, such as family or health, recently added diplomatic dimensions to her activities, a choice that is rather unusual.
