Risk of widespread frost in Brazilian crops decreases, but new polar mass worries

by

The polar air mass has advanced over Brazil and on Wednesday (18) it will bring a still intense cold, but a little milder than previously predicted, alleviating concerns about more severe and widespread frosts, as happened this Tuesday. , according to two meteorological agencies.

The Paraná Department of Agriculture, which monitored frost risks in the early hours of Tuesday, said it had no reports of the phenomenon occurring in an intensity capable of harming second crop corn, a crop that has the largest planted area at the moment in the state.

“No reports of frost, no damage expected. In general, low temperatures, but no frost formation at scale,” said Edmar Gervásio, from Deral (Department of Rural Economics).

Paraná expects to harvest a record winter corn crop of 16 million tons.

According to Somar Meteorologia, “among simulations that indicated less and colder with frost, those that indicated less cold and frost prevailed”, a trend that should continue in the coming days.

“Following logic, there is still forecast of frost in areas of northern Paraná, Mogiana, southern Minas Gerais and Cerrado on Wednesday, Thursday and eventually on Friday, but not as comprehensively,” said Somar, citing areas of coffee.

According to a bulletin on Tuesday morning from Rural Clima, which had not received reports of possible frosts last dawn, the passage of a cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina should also bring more cloudiness, preventing a greater drop in temperatures in the next days.

For agrometeorologist Marco Antônio dos Santos, from Rural Clima, between Wednesday and Thursday there are risks of frost, but they will be punctual in some agricultural areas.

“As we are seeing at the moment, there is a cloud cover due to the passage of the cyclone, and the temperatures don’t drop so much… this attenuates the drop in temperatures a little…”, said the agrometeorologist.

According to Climatempo, on Thursday, although the simulations show the spread of cold with potential for frosts also in the Triângulo Mineiro and Cerrado (coffee producing areas), clouds are forecast at dawn, causing the phenomenon to happen more pulverized, and not so comprehensive.

There are also risks for the formation of frost in Paraná, Alta Paulista, Mogiana and southern Minas Gerais on Wednesday, added Climatempo.

NEW DOUGH

“From Friday, the weather will open up completely,” said Santos, from Rural Clima, citing possible greater risks with frost, including the arrival of a new polar air mass in the country over the weekend, which could be more severe than than the current one for corn, coffee and sugarcane areas, among others.

“This one (the new polar mass) gives me more worries than this week, it has a bigger cold wave than this one, it’s going to lead to a monumental drop in temperatures over the weekend,” he said.

Regarding the cyclone, he said that the eastern region of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina could experience strong gusts of wind in the next 24 hours, with speeds above 90 km/h.
