In her speech at European Parliament on Wednesday, the President of Moldova Maia Sandu called on EU countries to support their country’s European ambitions.
In her speech to MEPs in Brussels, President Sandu present how Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine reflects Europe’s troubled past, with “shameful land grabs, conquests for geopolitical reasons and spheres of influence”. At the same time, he stressed the way in which Moldova and its citizens responded to the shock and agony of the war with kindness, generosity and compassion, hosting large numbers of Ukrainian refugees and providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
With the war raging, Moldova formally applied for EU membership in March 2022, and President Sandu expressed her firm belief that the country is part of the European Community.
“We know that political decisions need to be made at EU level. We also know that these decisions are not easy. However, granting candidate status to Moldova is the right decision. We belong to the European Union “he stated.
Finally, regarding the Russian attack, he pointed out that Moldova immediately condemned the war against Ukraine.
“We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as we have always done. “Crimea is Ukraine, Donbass is Ukraine, Kyiv is Ukraine, and it will be forever.”he stated.
