Brazil registered about 13.7 million people without work in the quarter ended in August of this year. According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the unemployment rate in that period was 13.2%. And being part of this statistic can be harmful not only for the finances, but also for the mental health of those who are unable to place themselves in the professional market.
This is the case of the young man from São Paulo Valter Lino, 25, graduated in business administration. “Every time I was unemployed, I felt like I had failed,” says Lino.
Those who are employed also face challenges when it comes to taking care of the psychological factor. “I had two bouts of burnout,” says publicist Carol Milters, 34.
The anguish of unemployment and mental health at work are themes of the second episode of the podcast Minha Vaga, Minhas Rules, published this Tuesday (23). Listen below:
For the work psychologist Miryam Mazieiro, from the Institute of Psychiatry at USP, unemployment can affect mental health because we live in a society in which “work shapes our identity”.
“[O emprego] it has a very great centrality in the life of the adult individual. When we introduce ourselves to someone, we usually ask the person’s name and then what they do. Work defines us.”
