The tension generated by the new variant of Covid-19 this Friday (26) resulted in widespread declines in shares of companies that are part of the Ibovespa, the benchmark index of the Brazilian Stock Exchange.
Companies most vulnerable to possible measures to restrict circulation were the most affected by the wave of aversion to risky investments, especially in the aviation and tourism sectors.
Activities linked to retail, the financial sector and the production of fuels also appeared in the list of main losses.
At 12:33 pm, the ten biggest falls on the Stock Exchange were those of the companies Gol (-13.39%), Azul (-12.12%), PetroRio (-9.60%), Embraer (-9.51%), CVC (-9.46%), Getnet (-8.08%), Inter Bank (-7.27%), Pan Bank (6.99%), Cogna Educacional (-6.80%) and Iguatemi (-6 .52%).
The Ibovespa retreated 3.64% to 101,957.
“Companies in the aviation and tourism sector, those most impacted by Covid, are naturally the ones that suffer most from doubts about the new variant”, commented Ativa Investimentos, in a note.
The most important commodities for the Brazilian market also suffered the impact, with emphasis on the sharp drop in oil. Brent barrel retreated 5.25%, to US$ 77.90 (R$ 427.03). Iron ore futures contracts tumbled 4.87%.
The drop in these commodities was pulling the country’s most liquid stocks into the fund. Petrobras and Vale fell 4.12% and 3.52%, leading the list of the most traded shares.
Bradesco shares fell 5.03%, ranking third in trading volume.
“It is not a good day for the Brazilian stock exchange, due to the sharp falls in oil and iron ore, which have been ensuring reasonable performance in recent days,” said Nicolas Borsoi, chief economist at Nova Futura.
Detected earlier this week, a new variant of Sars-Cov-2, which causes Covid, has generated a huge wave of concern in many countries around the world.
It is too early to understand its effects on contagion, disease severity or vaccine effectiveness, but because it has so many mutations, governments have preferred to anticipate as task forces of scientists work “24 hours a day” to understand it. .
