by

The finance minister left open the possibility of new interventions from September

Until July 15th the amounts resulting from the Power Pass will have been paid for the compensations from the additional electricity charges up to 600 euros, according to what Finance Minister Christos Staikouras emphasized a while ago speaking on Open TV.

At the same time, the minister he left open the possibility of new interventions from September, in order to address accuracy. He noted that the fiscal picture is positive and the first data show that a new fiscal space can be created.

As he characteristically pointed out, “we have found fiscal space and we are giving this “cushion” back to the citizens in fuel and energy subsidies. Now a new space is being created for the interventions that will take place from September”, he underlined.

At the same time, he noted that although no one knows the course of increases in natural gas and fuel, he estimates that they will remain at high levels, so the 6 billion euros must be increased.

Referring to the solidarity levy, Chr. Staikouras argued that “we have an obligation to abolish it for civil servants and pensioners. It is a commitment of ours for which we must save 450 million euros in order to be implemented.”

He also mentioned that these interventions are done because revenues are above initial estimates a fact that allows “to increase the disposable income of citizens”.

However, he hastened to clarify that “needs are unlimited while resources are limited, so we will help those in need in a targeted manner. There are no spare trees, we try to do our best.”

As for her refundable deposit he emphasized that within the week the settlement statements will be posted and the citizens will know what they will have to return to the state and it remains for them to decide whether they will pay it once with a 15% discount or in 96 installments.

He characteristically stated that “we took the measure quite far back. It was 8.3 billion euros. We estimate that around 3 billion will be returned. Several businesses in 2021 have performed very well. So the haircuts were much less. Note that overall businesses in 2021 had a higher turnover than in 2021.”

Finally, answering a question about whether there will be announcements tomorrow about a new punctuality check, he noted that “nothing will be announced tomorrow, we have just announced the fuel measures. Citizens have not yet seen the energy intervention in their wallets, they will see it by July 15. Step by step. At this moment, it is important for citizens to see 600 million euros in their bills, from fuel and the electricity subsidy”.
