Podcast: the changes in Auxílio Brasil and the weaknesses of the program, even with a boost

by

The Chamber of Deputies yesterday approved the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution that boosts social programs and creates other benefits less than three months before the elections. The PEC must now be enacted.

The project is the main move of the Palácio do Planalto to reverse the poor performance of President Jair Bolsonaro in the election polls. The text, which authorizes the government to cut the spending ceiling, was approved with the support of the opposition.

The main measure in the package is the temporary increase of Auxílio Brasil to R$ 600. Planalto’s hope is that the benefit will help the poorest population and bring voters to Bolsonaro who associate income transfer programs with PT governments.

In this Thursday’s episode (14), Café da Manhã talks with historian Denise de Sordi, a researcher at Fiocruz and the Department of Sociology at USP. She explains what has changed in the transition from Bolsa Família to Auxílio Brasil, assesses the impact of increasing the benefit and discusses the program’s efficiency in fighting poverty.

The audio program is published on Spotify, partner streaming service of Sheet in the initiative and who specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the application, simply register for free.
