The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will go tomorrow Monday to Baku, in search of more natural gas from Azerbaijan, the Commission announced, as the EU seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources.
“Amid Russia’s continued weaponization of energy reserves, diversifying our energy imports is a priority for the EU,” the Commission said in a tweet. “President von der Leyen and (Energy) Commissioner Kantry Simpson will be in Azerbaijan tomorrow to further strengthen our cooperation,” he added.
According to a draft seen by Reuters on July 14, the Commission proposed to EU countries a deal with Azerbaijan to increase gas imports and support the expansion of the Southern Natural Gas Corridor to do so.
THE Germanythe world’s fourth-largest economy, is preparing for all possible scenarios, including a complete shutdown of natural gas deliveries from Russia when the 10-day routine maintenance period for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline ends this week.
Earlier, via Twitter, Russia’s ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, wrote: “Russia has never refused to continue gas deliveries to Europe and fully complies with its contractual obligations.”
