Inflation 9% in Britain in June

by

A poll of economists by Reuters focused on an inflation rate of 9.3 percent, up from 9.1 percent in May

Consumer price inflation rose again in Britain in June to an annual rate of 9.4%.

This is the highest annual rate of inflation since early 1982, according to economic data that underscores the chances of a larger-than-usual rate hike from the Bank of England (BoE) next month.

A poll of economists by Reuters focused on an inflation rate of 9.3 percent versus 9.1 percent in May.

The latest rise means Britain had the highest inflation rate in June among the rest of the G7. Although both Canada and Japan have yet to release their inflation rate for the month of June, they are not expected to come close to the level of price increases recorded in Britain.

The BoE has raised borrowing costs five times since December as it tries to stop rising inflation from taking hold in the UK economy, and is expected to raise borrowing costs again in August when it meets formulation of monetary policy.
