After the Commission’s request for a 15% cut in the consumption of natural gas in the EU, Athens seems to be launching its own program for its energy sufficiency
The Greek government is studying all the scenarios for the country’s energy sufficiency, in the shadow of the Russian “intimidation” for the natural gas supply in Europe.
After the Commission’s request for a 15% cut in the consumption of natural gas in the EU, Athens seems to be launching its own energy saving program.
According to a newspaper report Dailythe plan will be implemented from August and will start from public spaces, where, among other things, one in 10 lamps will go out of street lighting as well as beautification lights in archaeological and other monuments after 3 in the morning. Such a move is estimated to be able to reduce the consumption by 30%.
At the same time, the possibility of compensating the industry while “freezing” for the next 2 to 3 years and PPC’s lignitization program is being considered.
Depending on the developments, the situation will be re-examined and it is possible that further measures will be decided.
Also speaking to Kathimerini, the Minister of Energy Kostas Skrekaspoints out that the last measure to deal with the crisis is the intermittent loads to residential consumers and therefore to protected consumers.
“Nobody can rule anything out when there’s a war raging next to us,” he says, explaining that with energy tight in the international market, a random event can cause a severe disruption in supply and prices.
Mr. Skrekas also stated that “the government is studying a support mechanism for the industry, if a pan-European solution is not finally adopted”
He adds that the implementation of the specific mechanism requires approval from the Commission, while its financing can also be covered with resources from pollutant auctions.
