See who is entitled to the social electricity tariff

by

Vulnerable consumers are entitled to a social tariff on their electricity bills. The modality requires the family to be included in the Federal Government’s CadÚnico, and to have a family income per person of up to half the minimum wage per month (BRL 550 in 2021).

Those who receive the BPC (Continued Cash Benefit), a benefit from the INSS (National Social Security Institute) for seniors over 65 or people with disabilities in a situation of misery, are also entitled to the social tariff.

In addition, families with a total monthly income of up to three minimum wages (R$ 3,300 in 2021) who have one or more members with illnesses or disabilities whose medical treatment depends on equipment that requires electricity consumption can apply for inclusion in the program.

President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) signed, this Tuesday (30), new rules that automate the inclusion of families already enrolled in government social programs in the social tariff. The objective is that over 11.5 million families can receive the discounts. Today, 12.3 million homes are covered.

Customers who receive the social tariff are exempt from payments related to charges — the CDE (Energy Development Account) and the Proinfa (Incentive Program for Alternative Sources of Electric Energy).

Benefited homes also have a discount of 10% to 65%, depending on the consumption range, on the electricity bill. For quilombolas and indigenous people, the discount can reach 100%.

How to apply for the benefit

One of the family members must ask the electricity distributor responsible for the region where they live to classify the consumer unit in the low-income residential subclass. It is necessary to present the following information:

  • CPF and photo identity card, which could be the Rani (Administrative Registry of Indigenous Birth)
  • Code of the consumer unit (residence) that will be benefited, which can be found on the electricity bill
  • NIS (Social Identification Number), CadÚnico Family Code or NB (Benefit Number) for those who receive the BPC
  • In the case of families with people who need continuous use of appliances dependent on electricity, it is also necessary to present a report and medical certificate proving the need
