Truck drivers do not join the strike, and leaders blame the risk of fines

by

The stoppage announced by truck drivers for this Monday (1) had no force and, again, only isolated and isolated demonstrations were registered, as in other protest attempts that took place this year.

Throughout the day, federal highways and strategic ports for the country’s logistics operated without interruption, according to a survey by the PRF (Federal Highway Police) released by the Ministry of Infrastructure.

Throughout the day, traffic flowed normally on federal highways. In the morning, the PRF identified two truck drivers’ concentration points: one on BR-116, near Barra Mansa (RJ), and another on BR-101, in Rio Bonito (RJ). However, no partial or full locks were recorded.

Gas stations and stopping points for truck drivers also had no strike action or movements on four of the main roads that pass through São Paulo.

A sheet traveled the Presidente Dutra highways (which connects the capital of São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro), in the São Paulo-Taubaté stretch (130km); Anhanguera, on the Campinas-São Paulo stretch (97 km); Dom Pedro 1º, towards Jacareí-Campinas (140 km); and Fernão Dias, which connects São Paulo to Belo Horizonte, on the Atibaia-São Paulo stretch (60 km). In none were there protests.

A truck driver who went from Rio de Janeiro to São José dos Campos (SP) stated that he did not see any movement on the way, and that he would continue the journey normally to São Paulo.

For Carlos Alberto Litti Dahmer, director of CNTTL (National Confederation of Transport and Logistics Workers), one of the entities that called for the strike, court decisions that prohibited the blocking of highways are the cause of the low membership of the category.

According to him, fear of fines inhibited mobilization. “We have a prohibitory interdiction, you cannot set foot on the track under penalty of [ter que pagar] R$100 thousand”, he says.

Last Saturday (30), the Court prohibited the blocking of roads in several states, with fines ranging from R$5,000 to R$1 million for individuals and companies that fail to comply with the order.

“Courage to lock the track is not lacking, what is lacking is money to pay the compensation they want to collect”, says the director.

Earlier this Monday afternoon, the CNTTL had counted protests in five locations: in the ports of Santos, Salvador and Ijuí (RS), and in the cities of Volta Redonda (RJ) and São José dos Pinhais (PR).

Even without road blocks, Dahmer assesses that the first day of stoppage was quite positive. According to him, the autonomous truckers did not close the roads, but stopped at home.

“We are here at the junction of BR-285 and BR-342, in Rio Grande do Sul, which is the second largest junction in the state. I assure you that 90% of autonomous truck drivers have stopped, those who are driving here are [caminhoneiros] of companies. “

During the night, protesters even occupied a region near the port of Santos (SP), but were dispersed by the Military Police, who even used morale bombs. The truckers complained about the action. An injunction prohibited access to the port to be barred.

The police also prevented truck drivers from demonstrating, even prohibiting slogans. “Stay still, without verbalizing,” the police officer told drivers on the outskirts of the port.

Sought, the Military Police of São Paulo had not manifested itself until the conclusion of this report.

On Twitter, the Ministry of Infrastructure published a video that shows a person throwing stones at truck drivers traveling along the road. According to the folder, the acts were registered after the police dispersed the protesters.

“Criminals threw stones at vehicles that were in transit and damaged a tow truck belonging to the Ecovias dealership,” says the publication.

By email, Ecovias said that the vehicle’s windshield was hit by a rock around 12:30 am, at km 62 of Via Anchieta, towards Santos. According to the company, the employee driving the vehicle was not injured, and a police report was issued to investigate the case.

The stoppage was announced on the 16th, after an assembly organized by three representative entities. Truck drivers demand a review of the fuel price policy, compliance with the minimum freight floor and special retirement after 25 years of contribution.

The main complaint of the category, however, is in relation to the value of diesel, which has accumulated an increase of 65% since the beginning of the year.

On Monday (1), during an interview with journalists in Italy, President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) said that the federal government has no interest in the dividends received from Petrobras’ profits and that he is talking to the economic team so that these resources are reverted to bring down the price of diesel.

Bolsonaro also said that he received unofficial information that, in 20 days, the state-owned company will promote a new readjustment in fuel prices, and warned that this cannot happen.
