Panel SA: Toffoli defends 8-year ineligibility for judge at event with businessmen

by

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Dias Toffoli was applauded by the audience of businessmen and executives at the Esfera Brasil event, this Friday (19), when he defended the ineligibility of eight years for members of the judiciary, the Public Ministry and the police, an idea he’s been suggesting for years.

“So that they don’t use their positions to make themselves nationally known, going over the Constitution and laws to become heroes, as if the country were saved by heroes”, said the STF minister to applause at the event that took the title “Balance of Powers”.

Before Toffoli, Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco, who accompanied him on the panel at the event, criticized the politicization of justice in cases where judges, members of the Public Ministry or delegates invoke popular appeal.

“A judge cannot have a desire. If he wants to have a desire, let him leave the magistracy and go to the arduous vote dispute”, said Toffoli.

Neither Pacheco nor Toffoli mentioned names. Former judge Sergio Moro, who rose to public debate as a hero in the fight against corruption, will run for a seat in the Senate for Paraná this year.

Also in this election, data from the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) point to an increase of around 27% in the number of police, firefighters and military personnel who will run, reaching 1,858 names.
