Natural gas consumption in Brazil grows 57% in the 3rd quarter with demand for thermoelectric plants

by

The national consumption of natural gas ended the third quarter of this year with an increase of 57% compared to the same period of 2020, with a boost in thermal demand, according to data released this Friday by Abegás (Brazilian Association of Pipeline Gas Distribution Companies) .

The volume of gas consumed reached 81.6 million cubic meters per day, in the accumulated average for the quarter.

The strong increase in the indicator mainly reflects the greater demand for gas for electricity generation, given the greater activation of thermoelectric plants by the ONS (National Electric System Operator).

Between July and September, gas consumption for thermoelectric generation increased 160.9% on an annual basis, reaching 37.94 million cubic meters per day, on average.

All segments registered an increase in gas consumption in the third quarter. In industry, the rate was 12.9%. There was also recovery in the commercial segment, with 33%, says Abegás.

In a statement, the organization’s executive president, Augusto Salomon, said that natural gas this quarter showed “its immense importance for the country’s energy security” in the midst of an unprecedented water crisis.

“And it has also been relevant in this resumption of the industry,” he pointed out.
