The majority of consumers are willing to pay a higher price for an energy-efficient electrical appliance, but while energy scale pictograms are more understandable to most, they do not take the QR code into account in their final decision.
This emerges from a survey of the Consumers’ Association Quality of Life, (EKPOIZO) on the occasion of the change made this year in the energy label for some electrical appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, washers-dryers, light bulbs).
The association conducted research on the following issues:
1. whether and to what extent the change of the energy label on the electrical household appliances has been noticed
2. To what extent is the information provided by the new label for each product more understandable?
3. if our new label has led to more eco-friendly markets.
The survey was conducted electronically and anonymously, from September 7, 2021 to October 31, 2021. A total of 507 people responded, from all age groups, of which 259 were men and 248 were women.
The conclusions
The main conclusions of the research are the following:
Most (390 people, 77%) find the new energy label more understandable and helpful than the old one. This means that they understand better what information it provides. Note here that of the three characteristics of the energy label, the most understandable are the energy scale, then the pictograms and finally the QR code.
Also, a large number of consumers (450 people, 88.8%) said that when they are going to buy an electrical home appliance, they consult the energy label. In particular, they are influenced in their market first of all by the energy scale, then by the pictograms, and not at all by the QR code. This is because the energy scale is more understandable to most, because of its colors and simplicity, especially now that the categories A +, A ++, etc. no longer exist. In addition, 77.3% (392 people) are willing to pay a higher price for an electrical appliance that is energy efficient. This will also save them money in the long run, as more energy efficient appliances have lower electricity costs.
As for the QR code, by scanning it, we can access additional technical information about the product we want to buy, such as the dimensions of the model or the minimum warranty offered by the supplier.
According to the survey, it seems that 55.4% (281 people) do not know what the QR code is and what its purpose is, so they do not take it into account in their final decision, when they are going to buy an electrical device. It is noteworthy that even if they know what this code is, they do not go through the process of finding out more, probably because of the steps they need to take to access this information.
Finally, most (258 people, 50.9%) believe that this new energy label will affect the environment in which we live, and in particular, 81% (209 people) said that it will positively affect it. However, 51.3% (260 people) said they did not know if we would benefit as a society from this change. That is, the connection and interaction between the benefit of the environment and the benefit of society does not seem to be easily understood.
