Opinion – Eduardo Sodré: Iveco launches gas truck in Brazil and exhibits electric cars in Germany

by

The 2012 edition of the Hannover Motor Show is part of the history of Iveco in Brazil. That year, the Italian company announced that the extra-heavy Stralis Hi-Way would be produced in Sete Lagoas (MG). It was then one of the most modern models in the segment, elected Truck of the Year in Europe.

After 10 years, the manufacturer uses the same German stage to confirm the arrival of models powered by natural gas in the country, in addition to global electrification plans.

The first CNG truck is precisely the Hi-Way. A first batch of 20 units has already been assembled, and now the company is starting to accelerate manufacturing. The main competitor in the segment is the Swedish Scania, which is showing the evolution of its biomethane models in Germany.

While gas is Iveco’s gift in Brazil, the company’s electric vehicles appear in Europe. One of them is the Nikola Tre, with an estimated range of 500 kilometers. The Italian manufacturer claims that the batteries can have 80% of their energy recovered in 1h30, as long as the truck is plugged into a 350kW charger.

It is one of the most impressive models on display at the 2022 Hannover Motor Show, which ends this Sunday (25). The front part is dominated by a black mask that simulates the grille, while the accumulators are installed behind the cabin.

The PBT (total gross weight) is 44 tons, and the base of the electric truck comes from the Iveco S-Way.

Nikola was born in the USA and became a partner of the Italian manufacturer in 2019. The Tre model is being produced in Ulm, Germany.

The union gave the American brand a new chance. Its creator, businessman Trevor Milton, faces legal problems and has been away from the company since 2020, when he was accused of deceiving the market by simulating that a hydrogen-powered model would be ready.

The farce resulted in the cancellation of a billionaire investment that would have been made by General Motors, which could have ended the company’s history.

Iveco has put the house in order, and the hydrogen truck project will become a reality: the prototype is another attraction of the Nikola brand in Hannover. According to the manufacturer, it will be released next year.

Another electric novelty is the e-Daily van, which should arrive in Brazil between 2023 and 2024. This segment tends to grow in the country, driven by delivery companies that want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Ford has confirmed the arrival of the e-Transit next year, and there are already “zero smoke” vans for sale: the Peugeot e-Expert, Citroën e-Jumpy and JAC E-JV5.5 models.

The American automaker will also bring the hybrid version of the Maverick pickup and the 100% electric SUV Mustang Mach-e. Both also debut in 2023.
