Vaivém: For consultancy, wheat crop exceeds 10 million tons

by

As the harvesters make their way through the field, the wheat production numbers become clearer. National production is expected to reach 10.05 million tons in 2022/23, up 20.8% from the previous one.

The numbers are from StoneX consultancy, which makes the fourth national production estimate for the cereal. Larger areas in some states, better productivity, regular rainfall and the absence of more severe weather effects in producing regions led to this record volume.

StoneX’s data is even more optimistic than that of state wheat entities. The Deral (Department of Rural Economy) of Paraná believes in an area reduction of 4% in the state.

The consultancy already foresees an increase of 4.9% in the state, believing in an area of 1.28 million hectares for this year.

With this, the production of Paraná should reach 3.81 million tons, surpassing the previous one by 11.7%.

Rio Grande do Sul leads the national production, reaching 4.95 million tons, according to StoneX. If implemented, this volume would exceed by 25.7% that of the previous period.

The consultancy also attributes the increase in production this year to a better performance of wheat in several states outside the South region, traditionally the main producer.

São Paulo is one of the examples. The wheat area, initially expected to be 88,000 hectares, should reach 110,000, which brings state production to 341,000 tons, according to the consultancy.

The average Brazilian productivity is 3.16 tons per hectare, but Santa Catarina managed 3.4 tons. Bahia, on the other hand, with a small area and irrigated wheat, will obtain 6 tons per hectare.

Conab (National Supply Company), which should bring new figures for the 2022 harvest this Thursday (6), had estimated, in September, a total area of 3.03 million hectares in the country and a production of 9 .36 million tons.

The national average productivity is 2.99 tons per hectare, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Even with a record production of 10.05 million tons, Brazil will need imports of 6.21 million. That’s because consumption will be 13 million, and exports will be 2.82 million.

The remaining stock for the next harvest will be 1.43 million tons, according to the consultancy.
