After long hours of negotiations between the Energy Ministers of Greece, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland, a joint letter was sent to the European Commission to address high gas prices.

The relevant discussions started on the evening of Tuesday, October 11, during the informal Energy Council, and ended a while ago, in a spirit of constructive cooperation.

The two main points of the letter, based on the proposal submitted by the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in March to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are as follows:

1. The imposition of a ceiling on the wholesale natural gas market.
2. Through a European Regulation, to determine a new index to which the price of natural gas in long-term contracts will be linked.

On this issue, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, made the following statement: “The joint letter we sent to the European Commission with my other four counterparts is an essential, positive step in Europe’s effort to face the energy crisis together .

The proposal of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which has been submitted to the President of the Commission since March, was a point of reference for finding an effective solution. I am optimistic that the final decisions will be taken in time, so that the United Europe can decisively support its citizens in view of the difficult winter ahead”.
