Government appoints Sandoval Feitosa, director of Aneel, to head the agency, says minister

The director of Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) Sandoval Feitosa was appointed to command the autarchy, after the end of the mandate of the current director-general, André Pepitone, said on Thursday (9) the minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque.

Pepitone’s term ends in August of next year.

“The MME has appointed Dr. Sandoval to replace Director General André Pepitone,” said Bento at a virtual press conference to the association of foreign correspondents.

The executive who leaves office is already in his second term and could not be reappointed to the general directorate of Aneel.

Sandoval’s name would have already been forwarded to the Civil House and, to assume the position in 2022, he would have to be judged in Congress.

The minister also revealed that next week the amount of the loan to the electricity sector should be defined to cover higher costs arising from the water crisis — the largest in the country.

The market’s estimate was that the support could be between R$ 10 billion and R$ 15 billion, but when asked about the amount, Bento said he hopes that this amount “is wrong”.

Due to the biggest water crisis in more than 90 years, the government has been implementing since last year actions to mitigate and face the problem. More onerous measures had to be adopted, such as the activation of more thermal plants and the creation of the water scarcity flag.

However, according to Bento, the level of the hydroelectric reservoirs is better with the arrival of the rainy season and there is no risk of blackout or rationing in 2022.

The minister acknowledged that there is pressure from energy on costs for companies and consumers, but highlighted that there is ongoing work in the government to make the energy bill cheaper.

“Not only do we believe that we will have a better wet season, we will also be able to ship the hydraulic park in greater volume; through auctions held in the past at a cheaper cost,” he said.

“We have a sum of measures and actions that will reduce the price of the tariff and impact consumers. It is permanent work”, he concluded.
