Banker Ricardo Lacerda, from the investment bank BR Partners, decided to leave the Novo party this Saturday (15th), after the reaction of co-religionists against João Amoêdo, who declared his vote for Lula in the 2nd round.
Founder of Novo and presidential candidate for the party in 2018, Amoêdo said that, against Bolsonaro’s re-election, he will vote for the PT for the first time in his life. In an interview with Panel SA, he stated that the current president is “an autocratic ruler who places himself above institutions”.
The speech triggered a series of reactions in the party. Eduardo Ribeiro, now president of Novo, called Amoêdo’s declaration of vote “shameful, embarrassing and incoherent”. Felipe D’Avila, presidential candidate of the defeated party in the 1st round of this year, took to social media to say “Amoêdo, take the cap and leave”. The party’s national directory also issued a similar note.
In retaliation, Ricardo Lacerda said that he disagreed with Amoêdo’s decision to vote for Lula, but considered his initiative “courageous, well-founded and strictly personal.”
In a message on social networks, Lacerda regretted the tone of criticism made by the legend. “The reaction of the Novo party and its leaders condemning it, in a humiliating attempt to lick the leftovers of Bolsonarism, is regrettable. I will disaffiliate,” wrote the banker.
When declaring his vote for Lula, Amoêdo noted that he maintains criticism and restrictions on the PT for various reasons, such as the corruption scandals and economic crisis, however, he sees a substantially greater risk in Bolsonaro. Among the risks that make him give up the null vote, he cites Bolsonaro’s recent statement about changing the composition of the STF.
Asked if he expected to receive criticism from Novo, Amoêdo said that it would be possible, but it would not be coherent.
“The Novo statute does not provide for any restriction on the member in situations like this, and one of the party’s principles is freedom of expression. the end of the elections, even though there was a party directive that guided the institution and the candidacies for this year as opposition to the federal government”, said Amoêdo.
